What do historic photographs offer to your organization? Hear how the photograph collection at Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House was discovered, inventoried, and preserved. Wednesday June 7th, 2023 2pm – Colin Turner, Executive Director, Midwest Arts Conservation Center

Prepare for federal, state, regional, and local grant opportunities with these essential grant writing strategies. Gain funding for preservation and conservation projects such as: purchasing archival supplies and materials, completing storage upgrades, obtaining environmental monitoring equipment, receiving a general preservation assessment, providing your staff with training, and pursuing conservation treatments for your artifacts. In this session we will discuss a prioritized collections care protocol where preservation projects are developed in a logical progression that will increase your competitiveness in the grant application process.

Thursday June 8th, 2023 2pm – Allison M. Fleshmann, Associate Professor of Chemistry, Lawrence University

Description: What Can Chemistry Do For You?

What can chemistry do for you? From a curation or museum stand-point you might not think much, but I hope to convince you that looking at objects with a chemistry perspective can be quite enlightening! I’ll be sharing some insights from my Chemistry of Art course, lessons learned along the way of identifying pigments and inks in 14th century illuminated manuscripts, as well as some general resources on the intersection of chemistry and preservation. We’ll also have some time for a Q&A.

Bio: Allison Fleshman is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Lawrence University of Wisconsin. She earned her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Oklahoma studying the fundamental properties of conductive liquids that are used in lithium battery systems. She uses her skills in vibrational spectroscopy to study art objects. She teaches classes in Thermodynamics & Reaction Kinetics, Quantum Chemistry & Spectroscopy, and the Chemistry of Art.
